When the Austria-Hungarian Empire disappeared in World War I,
Slovenia joined Serbia and Croatia to form a kingdom of united southern Slavs.
However, Slovenia and Croatia was immediately attacked by Italy and was
forced to seek the help of Serbia.

In 1929, the first Yugoslavia under Serbian influence was born.
In 1941, Nazi Germany and Italy under Mussolini invaded Yugoslavia,
and Slovenia was split into three by Germany, Italy, and Hungary, again
succumbing to foreign powers. Under such conditions, the Yugoslav
Communist Party led by Josef Broz Tito fought to liberate the nation from
fascism. Yugoslavia was restored in 1945 with Belgrade as its capital.
Later, President Tito's clash with Stalinist Soviet Union steered the
country to take the socialist path. A federal constitution was promulgated in
the 1970s, allowing each republic to maintain autonomy.
