Processed foods
such as sausages and salami and other meat dishes are found widely throughout
Slovenia. In particular,
pr ut (semi-cured ham) made by making the most
of topographical features of the karst and its dry air is Slovenia's foremost
product. There are also traditional Slovenian confectionary: potica made
with flour and rich with walnuts and raisins, and prekmurska gibanica, a rich
yeast cake. Famed ethnic dishes include millet flour cooked like mashed
potatoes and eaten as a side dish and struklji, bread rolls filled with
cheese and other fillings. Homemade Slovenian dishes offer simple pleasures
that bring out the best taste of the ingredients. Located at roughly the
same latitude as the Bordeaux region of France, the country is also a famed
wine producer. Dry wines of eastern Slovenia and ruby-colored tangent "Teran"
wine of the western region enhance the flavor of local cuisine. Its location
bordering four countries and its variation in nature offer a diversity in
foods. |
